Message from the President
Third Quarter, 2011
Dear valued member of ISM-SEM,
We welcome twelve new members who joined ISM-SEM over the summer!
Here is what’s happening:
-
Fall is nomination time! I strongly encourage each of you to consider running for a Board of Director position, or volunteering to work on a committee. Your talents are needed! Just fill out a self-nomination form , and send it in. Forms are available from Melissa Countryman and on our website.
The election for the new board takes place at our November 17 member meeting.

Crain’s ‘Buy Michigan’ Event
September 22, MSU Management Education Center in Troy
Companies interested in learning more about the Pure Michigan Connect plan to create more procurement opportunities for in-state businesses can meet top purchasing managers at this event. I am honored to be one of the speakers. Speakers include Jeff Brownlee, purchasing director for the state of Michigan, and John Eley Jr., senior supply manager for DTE Energy Co. I am very appreciative of our ISM-SEM members who volunteered to serve as subject expert facilitators for the round-table discussions! For more information, visit www.crainsdetroit.com/events.
October 5, at AIAG in Southfield
ISM-SEM is proud to develop and host this brand-new event, in partnership with the Detroit Regional Chamber. This is a great opportunity for Metro Detroit suppliers to meet and greet purchasing professionals from area companies! People who have a procurement/ sourcing need will receive one- on-one time with those who can fulfill the need. See our website for more details.
November 1, at AIAG in Southfield
ISM-SEM is hosting two negotiation experts: Greg Williams, The Master Negotiator and Body Language Expert (www.theMasterNegotiator.com), and Mary A. Redmond, The Negotiation Success Coach (www.IndependentLeaseReview.com).
Sign up now for this half-day event, including four workshops, for only $79! 3 or more registrants from one company are only $69 each! See our website to register.
Affiliate agreement work continued over the summer. New affiliate agreements have been successfully executed with Advanced Purchasing Dynamics (APD) and the Center for Empowerment and Economic Development (CEED)! Make sure you click on their icons on our website to see their event calendars. More agreements are being finalized.
ISM-SEM’s long history of outstanding leadership was on display at our September 15 member meeting. Past presidents who continue to actively support ISM-SEM were recognized for their selfless contribution. Congratulations to Ken Choops, Ken Doherty, Lori Sisk, Rick Moehle, Christine Kavka, Katia Moreas, and Melissa Countryman!
A special certificate was awarded to Sara Mahmood at the September 15 member meeting. Sara is one of only 10 students in the nation to receive the R. Gene Richter scholarship for 2011 from ISM National.
Sara is a Supply Management student at Wayne State University, and is president of WSU’s Global Supply Management Association. She intends on making supply management her career, and is off to a very bright start! Congratulations, Sara!
I am working with past president Lori Sisk and editors at Crain’s Detroit Business to develop a list of purchasing experts from ISM-SEM’s membership. Based on their expertise, these individuals will be contacted by Crain’s to offer Q&A advice and guidance to area companies. This initiative is great exposure for ISM-SEM, and we look forward to working with Crain’s to educate its readership.
Another great satellite seminar, entitled “Manage…Lead…Transform—What You Need to Know to be Effective.”
October 20 at Ukrainian Cultural Center in Warren
Eric Swartz, Vice President of Corporate Purchasing at Lear, will present “Supply Chain Sustainability and Risk Management in a Recovering Economy.” Excellent topic.
