Innovation: A Necessary Core Competency

Peter Drucker was quoted as saying that “every organization – not just businesses – needs one core competence: innovation.” However, innovation, invention and continuous improvement are terms that are often confused!

A 2010 McKinsey Global Survey reported that 84 percent of executives say innovation is extremely or very important to their companies' growth strategy. Further, most executives believe innovation is complex, involves a certain level of ambiguity and that a "process for innovation" is an oxymoron.

In reality, innovation has evolved over time as a science; much like quality management did several decades ago. There are now models and methods for creating innovation “on demand” that can be learned by anyone in your organization to drive innovation into products, services and business processes.

.
